three things: christmas

I love Christmas. Seriously love it. It's my favourite holiday and favourite time of year. As soon as the 1st of December hits, I'm ready to get in the Christmas spirit! Last Christmas was a bit of an adjustment, having to organize different schedules, and go from one family celebration to another. I'm determined to not have any stress this year, and to just enjoy the season that I love so much! There are countless things that I love about the days leading up to December 25th (and even beyond), but here are the three main reasons why I love Christmas:

1. Traditions. Growing up, my family had so many little Christmas traditions, whether it was getting out our homemade advent calendar, watching White Christmas, or eating my dad's sticky buns on Christmas morning. Now that I'm older, I'm building new Christmas traditions, ones including Rob and now my niece Penny. Some of the traditions I hold on to and still continue, but I look forward to the new ones I will form over the next few years.

2. The Spirit. There's definitely something special that happens around this time of year, especially when the snow begins to fall here in Ontario. Working in a charity, I certainly notice the increase in charitable donations, and people just generally seem to be NICER. When I'm sitting with my family, enjoying Christmas goodies, looking at the twinkling lights on the tree, and wearing a cozy winter sweater, I get this little warm feeling in my stomach...a feeling of love and contentment. I also reflect on what Christmas really means to me; the story of Jesus' birth and how that amazing story effects my life today.

3. Music! I LOVE Christmas music (not all, but most!). Nothing gets me into a Christmas mood more than some wonderful music of the season. I love that there are carols that are timeless, and still enjoyed by people today, hundreds of years later.

I know I'm spouting annoying Christmas cheer already, but I hope that you feel love this holiday season. For some people, Christmas can be a tough time for a variety of reasons (myself included. While I love this season, there are people that I really miss during this time of year), so I hope that we can all do our best to make everyone feel welcomed and loved (and obviously this should be something that we pursue all year round!).

20 days until Christmas!!!

my so-called life

I decided to do some indoor outfit shots, featuring the record store where Rob works, Sonic Boom. It's such a cool space, with hundreds of records and CDs, and I incidentally end up spending quite a bit of time there.

When I put this outfit on, complete with my winter boots, Rob said I looked very "My So-Called Life", aka mid-90s. And you know what? I didn't mind at all :)

fall back

So I've been adjusting to this autumn time change, and clearly my blog has suffered a bit. Usually Rob and I will try and do photos on evenings when we are both available, but now it's dark by the time I leave work at 5:30, and Rob tends to work most weekend...that and the fact that this month is a bit insane for me! So please bare with me as I re-adjust to day-light savings.

I really enjoy fall before it gets too cold, but I must say I dislike how short the days get. I think that's one of the reasons why I love summer so much (that and the heat!). I get a bit disoriented, thinking it's 9pm when really it's only 6pm. Does anyone else struggle with the time change adjustment?!

I hope to shove in as many outfit photos during the weekends as possible, so as to avoid complete silence on here. I love sharing a bit of my life with you, and want to try and keep consistent!

Have a great Monday!

two hundred

Well, this is officially my 200th blog post! It's funny to think that I've written about 200 different topics, issues, thoughts, dreams, and adventures...and that you've read each of those. Thank you for reading and for being interested in my little life. It's been so fun to see this blog change and grow. I looked back at what my first blog post was, and thought I would share that with you:

"I think I've always felt a certain pressure that if I had a blog it needed to have a particular topic and be really flashy and interesting. I think these two things have always deterred me from actually ever starting one. I've been thinking of starting a blog for quite awhile now, and suddenly decided today, amongst fits of boredum, that I NEEDED to start a blog. So, putting aside my fears of not measuring up in the blog world, I have started this humble (and I hope not too uninteresting) blog. I hope to just use this as a venue for posting my thoughts, musings, and anything else I find interesting or inspiring. And I'm sorry in advance for the excessive amounts of vintage clothing, shoes, and accessories that are sure to appear on here."

I never could have imagined the direction that this blog would take, and it's certainly been an adventure. I hope that you'll stick with me to see where life - and this blog - will take me.

Lots of love, Lo

the wind was our violin

Autumn walks in the evening are so refreshing. I want to try and get the most out of them before I have to be holed up inside for the winter. This was a simple work outfit, but I felt very fall-worthy in it because of the colour of the sweater. I love red, and tend to always wear red lipstick, yet I surprisingly don't really own any red clothing. This sweater is the only truly red piece that I own.

I think I'm going to have fun layering this short-sleeved sweater, and it just might inspire a few more autumn walks. :)

I hope you are having a good Wednesday. Tonight Rob and I get to babysit my niece Penny for the second time. We are both so excited, as it's nice to have some quality time with her. She's growing so much and learning new things everyday. It's really amazing to watch.

Do you have any fun plans for this evening?

connected

On Sunday, Rob and I went to a vintage clothing sale up the road from my house. The sale was in this beautiful space called the Wychwood Barns. One thing that I love about my city is the ability to re-invent old spaces, giving them new and innovative uses. Wychwood Barns was once a streetcar maintenance facility in 1913, but it is now a mixed-use building, with offices for local community organizations, artist spaces, a greenhouse, a farmer's market, and public green spaces. There is always some kind of event or show going on there, and it's a very lively community area. It's so nice to see everyone from the surrounding neighbourhoods enjoying and using the facility to it's fullest.

I hope that you too can get out and enjoy your local community center or local events. I find it makes me feel just a little bit more connected to those around me in this huge city.

october baby

This past weekend was so great. Sunday was my 28th birthday, but celebrations started Saturday night when I went out for dinner with family. On Sunday, Rob really spoiled me with brunch, this incredible 1960's cape/jacket, a cute bird pin, and dinner and a movie. The last few years I haven't really made a big deal out of my birthday, but I must admit it is nice to feel a bit special at least one day of the year!

i saw you in the wild

This past weekend was Canadian Thanksgiving. I headed up north to Muskoka region with my brother-in-law, my sister, and my little niece (she's 2 months old now!). Rob had to work so he wasn't able to come, but we had a nice time anyway. We stayed at my mom's and just relaxed, ate lots of delicious food, and enjoyed the fall colours.

I had planned to do some outfit photos in the lovely forested area near my mom's place, but it turned out that most of the leaves around there had fallen on the ground already, and I conveniently forgot my camera in Toronto. I thought it was worth a shot anyway, so my mom used my sister's i-phone to take the photos. I think they turned out pretty decently despite all the obstacles :)

acceptance

Lately I've been feeling uninspired by my wardrobe (maybe even a bit bored with it). It's times like these that I feel like I have to go buy something new in order to feel interesting again. But lately I've been trying to control my spending and save money for more important "life" things. I find that when I feel uninspired with my wardrobe I can sometimes feel a bit insecure about how I look. These are insecurities that I have struggled with my whole life (and probably always will)...comparing myself to others...feeling not good enough...feeling like I'm just fading into the crowd...

As a very shy child and teenager, I was always off in the shadows, but once I found my voice and my self-confidence my goal was to stand out as much as I could with the way that I dressed. I've always been someone others would describe as "a bit different", and at some point I began to accept and be proud about that. And fashion is my way of outwardly displaying that.

At times I still feel shy and quiet and introverted (actually often times), but I like to think that the way that I dress expresses something about me and my uniqueness for all to see.

The neat thing is, that just as I was feeling uninspired with my wardrobe, a friend asked me to style something from her clothing line. A fun new dress to play with! The company is called 5x5 Clothing and every piece is specially designed and ethically made in Thailand. The story and mission of 5x5 is really interesting, so be sure to take a minute to check out the website and read about how the clothes are made.

Have a great weekend! It's Thanksgiving here in Canada (yay long weekend!) and I'll be spending it with family and lots of food!

apple picking

Last weekend I went apple picking, which I haven't done since I was a kid. It was nice to get out of the city for a bit and just be out enjoying the amazing fall weather. I'm planning on using some of the apples to make a crumble for our Canadian Thanksgiving this weekend.

I planned on writing this post much earlier in the week, but I've been out of commission with a pretty band fall cold, so I apologize for the lack of blog posts. Sometimes it's more important to just rest and take care of yourself, and that's what I've been doing. I rarely get sick, and am blessed to be a pretty healthy person, but when I do come down with a sickness, it tends to wipe me out pretty badly. But I'm on the mend now, and will hopefully be back into regular activities soon.

le temps de l'amour

I'm constantly inspired by the 1960's, whether it's the clothes, the makeup, the hair, or the music (especially the music). I'm sure you may have noticed my love for 1960's dresses on here. The really neat thing is that shift dresses are in style again (but let's be honest, when are they not?! It's a classic style), so I can find items with the 60's silhouette in some of the regular stores that I usually shop in.

This hounds tooth dress is originally from H&M, but I was able to snag it while thrift shopping for about $6. I love a good deal. And the BEST part is that this dress is sooooo comfortable. I secretly imagine that I am wearing a nightgown to work. ;)
